Who Am I ?
AMBER DE VOS
An Introduction to AMBER DE VOS
1: Who am I?
Amber De Vos, a.k.a. “The Girl” at PMc
2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?
I’m a professional photographer, actor, model and muse. I am currently building out my personal portrait studio, planning my next fine art show, and adding work to my actor’s reel.
3: Where are you from and where are you going?
I’m originally from Lake Tahoe, Nevada, but feel like a natural New Yorker. I’m going all the way to the top!
4: Who is your biggest hero?
My grandparents, especially my grandmothers for always being strong, positive, female role models and mentors. And Benjamin Franklin for being a fearless person who never stopped being Great.
5: What book is your bible?
6: What are some things you love?
My family, people who are passionate about what they’re up to in life, reading a good book over and over again, training Capoeira, traveling. And some things you hate? Insecure and inept people, slow movers on an NYC sidewalk, and most of all, people who say, but don’t do.
7: What is your raison d’être?
In all the work I produce, whether in front or behind the camera, I am a storyteller. I observe, create or reproduce the world around me and seek to resonate with my audiences as deeply as possible.
8: What is your favorite color?
9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?
Batman, he’s a normal (non-mutant) guy who has the will power and means to go out and fight crime, for no other reason than to satisfy his sense of justice. It’s inspiring.
10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?
Le Bain at the Standard in the summer, in the winter? Under a comforter in my bed!
11: What turns you on?
Ambition, talent, intelligence… and a nice set of abs.
12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?
What’s my favorite thing about what I do? That I love it. I’ve been able to make a successful career working with some of the best photographers and artists, meeting and photographing some of the most fascinating and accomplished people, and visiting some of the most awe-inspiring locations all while creating work I’m proud of.
From pouring over the photo books of Immogen Cunningham and Dorothea Lange as a child, to interning at the prestigious Magnum Photos, to covering the Scene for the ubiquitous Patrick McMullan Company, and launching her own studio, A. De Vos Photo, Amber De Vos’s curiosity about imagery is endless. Her professional work can be seen in such publications as ArtForum, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, and Vogue among others. Her fine art work has been exhibited at powerHouse Arena in Brooklyn, NY and the Patrick McMullan Photographers group show in New York, NY. 2010 marks the first solo showing of De Vos’s work.
De Vos’s passion for the visual world began in earnest while living abroad in 2001, when through the lens of her grandfather’s Nikon F she saw a world that had not yet existed, but that she could never forget. She relocated to New York City in 2004 after receiving a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology and dual minors in Italian Studies and Photography from the University of Nevada, Reno to pursue the craft.
Since then, friends and mentors, master photographer Bruce Davidson, and painter Chuck Close among them, continue to encourage her to refine and develop the sensual, playful, painterly qualities that define her work.
Amber De Vos was born and raised in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
