Who Am I ?

TARIK MALAK & TIM DOUGLAS

An Introduction to TARIK MALAK & TIM DOUGLAS

January 2011

1: Who are we?

TM: If Bruce Lee, Sherlock Holmes, Gandhi and Brigitte Bardot would have had a menage-a-quatre… I would have been their illegitimate child.

TD:   What Tarik said, but older.

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

TM: I run SWELL. It’s pretty cool. Right now we are working on videos for Tommy Hilfiger, Cerruti and Elie Tahari, an iPad app project, some Conde Nast editorials and many MANY other things… At night we fight crime and build schools.

TD:  Just to clarify : We fight crimes against creativity and build schools of thought.  I also run SWELLs video department.

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

TM: I’m from Paris. Half French, half Brit’indian. Which gives me an edge, because I love cheese, bread and wine but I also know what a crumpet or a chapati is… New York is my home. I don’t see myself anywhere else right now. Web domination is where I am going.

TD: I’m Irish/American with an English accent, I’m usually from wherever is the most convenient at the time of asking.  As for where I’m going, I’m not sure but it’s almost guaranteed to look like a darkened editing suite.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

TM : The person who invented the garter belt. Also the one that invented the hamburger.

TD:  All of the impossibly talented people I have met and worked with over the years, people from whom I still reference and steal ideas and actual objects from on a regular basis.

5: What book is your bible?

TM: My MacBook pro… Otherwise there is that great book about footballer’s haircuts by Cris Freddi.

TD:  Almost any good book, provided it’s not about video editing, is a welcome distraction. I love Haruki Murakami novels for this very purpose, which is great as he seems to write as quickly as I read. My favorite book is actually “The Ring” by Koji Suzuki, the book the films were based on, really funny and scary.

6: What are some things you love?  And some things you hate?

TM: I love greasy food. I hate that it makes you fat. I feel like it’s really unfair… I mean, how can you sanely prefer greens to a steak frites (with mayo), lasagna or a nice caramelized onions cheeseburger ?

TD:  I love New York and I hate the fact I can’t think of anything else.

7: What is your raison d’être?

TM : Sounds like food is one of them. More seriously, life is so absurd…Just enjoying it while it lasts…

TD:  To improve…

TM : I like Tim’s answer better actually.. Could we switch ?

8: What is your favorite color?

TM: There’s not just one color for me!  It’s all about the whole color palette. Check out our reels, the proof is in the pudding…

TD:  Like Tarik was saying, its usually more about a good luminance curve than a particular color. But if I had to chose an actual color I’d say red, it’s energizing, vivid and matches my eyes.

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

TM: Snoopy I guess. I just wish he would break-dance more often.

TD:  Iron Fist and Deadpool were up there.  I was once given an entire collection of every Ironman comic from the first issue through to 1984. But they weren’t really my cup of tea and I think I gave threw them away, I don’t think I was familiar with the concept of collectors items at the time.  Oh and I was once a character in a friends graphic novel… but I don’t think I was very super or heroic, he obviously omitted some of my finer qualities.

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

TM: The Beatrice before it closed was definitively the best spot in NYC…A Hundred Acres is my fav’ food spot… But please don’t go, I beg you, I really enjoy not having to wait an hour for brunch!

TD:  Whole Foods in Columbus Circle.

11: What turns you on?

TM: My girl Marie. True fact.

TD:  Realtime rendering always leaves me week in the knees…

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

TM: I would try questions with complex words like “scholiast“, “zygodactylous” or “priapism“… Just to see the interviewee struggle. Yes, I’m cruel like that.

TD:  How do you lead such a healthy, fulfilling lifestyle while maintaining a good job and exciting social life?
