Who Am I ?
An Introduction to NELL ALK
1: Who am I?
My name is Nell Alk and I’m a 27-year-old arts and entertainment writer and reporter in New York City.
2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?
I write and report on all things arts and entertainment, from fashion to food; nightlife to design; music to film. I am currently contributing to NBC Niteside, MTV partner site OurStage, FabricMag and PompOnline. In the past I’ve written for InterviewMagazine, PaperMag and ZINK, among several other outlets. Most recently I was a top ten finalist in Sunglass Hut’s national Full Time Fabulous fashion blogger competition.
3: Where are you from and where are you going?
I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin and went to school in Upstate New York at Union College. Following graduation I attended the Columbia Publishing Course at Columbia’s J-School. I’ve lived in Brooklyn, the Upper East Side and Chelsea. I’m not entirely sure where it is I’m going in the figurative sense but, apart from dreams of ample travel, I have full intention of staying put. I love Chelsea and the only location that appeals to me more is the West Village, a 5-minute stroll from my front door.
4: Who is your biggest hero?
My biggest heroes are Alicia Silverstone, John Bartlett, Peter Singer and Moby.
5: What book is your bible?
My favorite book is White Oleander by Janet Fitch. I read it when I was far too young and it left a lasting impression on me. I’ve got to go back and re-read it as an adult. Other important titles are “Skinny Bitch“, “The End of Faith,” and “The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter.”
6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?
I love delicious vegan and vegetarian fare, particularly Candle 79 in New York. I love to travel, especially by boat. I love the band Friendly Fires, among myriad others, but I won’t go on and on. I love New York. Like, love, love, love it. I love fashion but I hate the cruelty that seems to be an inseparable element in this industry. I hate fast food chains and I hate ignorance (of gay rights, animal rights, environmental issues, education issues, etc.). I hate liars and cheaters, though at times in my life I’ve been both. I’m no saint but I’m far from a sinner.
7: What is your raison d’être?
Every day I continue to try to figure out my reason for existence, either subconsciously or in a painfully aware way. I may never know. It seems so far to be something akin to sharing my words with the world, delivering new and different subject matter or, at the very least, delivering personal/professional perspectives on said topics, and sporadically speaking (increasingly more often) on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves (i.e., animals).
8: What is your favorite color?
My favorite color is sage green but when dressing black is generally my bent.
9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?
My favorite comic book superhero is Super Ray from HBO’s Bored to Death. Honestly, comics aren’t my “thing” so I’m winging it.
10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?
My favorite NYC hot spot would have to be The Ace Hotel or The Jane Hotel. But I’m really not qualified to say. I am partial to my apartment. You can also find me looking but infrequently buying at Bergdorf and Barneys. Oh, and I’m a fan of SoHo House. It’s so close and provides this writer a great space to do work as well as meet new people.
11: What turns you on?
What turns me on is intelligence, wit, compassion, consideration and attractiveness/aesthetics.
12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?
Q: Would you like to be a paid columnist for and/or contributor to PMc Magazine?
