ROB PRUITT OPENING OF THE ANDY MONUMENT

April 2011

PUBLIC ART FUND presents ROB PRUITT: The Andy Monument
Union Square (Corner of 17th Street and Broadway, NYC)
March 30 – October 2, 2011

Yesterday, March 30, 2011 marked the launch of a new and historically powerful public monument, entitled The Andy Monument, in the heart of NYC: Union Square, carefully positioned right beneath Andy Warhol’s Factory.  From 1968 to 1984 such was the location of Andy Warhol’s Factory, where he and his collaborators reinvented the conventional artist’s studio, producing silkscreen paintings, films, music, books, magazines, and more. With his Union Square Factory as a creatively charged hub, Warhol became synonymous with the Downtown art scene.

Inspired by Warhol’s art and life, Rob Pruitt (b. 1964, Washington DC) created The Andy Monument as a tribute to the late artist. It stands on the street corner (East 17th Street and Broadway, NYC), just as Warhol did when he signed and gave away copies of Interview magazine.

Adapting the visual language of formal statuary, like the nearby monuments to Gandhi, Lincoln, and Washington, the seven-foot-tall figure stands atop a concrete pedestal, its chromed surface reflecting the surrounding neighborhood where Warhol worked for much of his life: Max’s Kansas City—a favorite Warhol hangout—once stood nearby, Interview magazine was launched in the neighborhood, and Valerie Solanas attempted her assassination of Warhol there.

This historical and symbolic monument is simply a must see stop for every New Yorker!

VISITING THE EXHIBITION

The Andy Monument will be on view in the pedestrian mall at the northwest corner of Union Square at 17th Street and Broadway. Subways: L, N, Q, R, 4, 5, 6 to Union Square. A free Guide By Cell explanation of the work will be available by calling 646.862.0945.
