PREYGROUND

A Sneak Peak of CARRIE SHALTZ & ZACH HYMAN’s PREYGROUND

Photography by Carrie Shaltz & Zach Hyman

April 2011

Carrie Shaltz & Zach Hyman present PREYGROUND.

Their first project won them the Open Call. Their prize money sent them on an art-making journey. Now Carrie Shaltz and Zach Hyman’s journey is coming to a thrilling conclusion with PREYGROUND, a multimedia Gallery Show at 3rd Ward that showcased their never-before-seen work.

PREYGROUND is a lush exploration of our natural, “wild” selves in a society that suppresses that exact behavior. Nude, masked, and with zero inhibitions, Carrie and Zach explore natural and man-made landscapes in striking, stylish tableaus that juxtapose animal physicality with the everyday.

Carrie Shaltz grew up in Flint, Michigan with her “partner-in-crime” & photographer brother Jason Shaltz. In 2004, she moved to NYC, and in 2009, this dynamic sister/brother duo created THE SHALTZES/photographers.  Then in 2010, they joined forces with fellow collaborator & photographer Zach Hyman to create the successful photo studio: DAMN Studio in Dumbo, Brooklyn.  Carrie is a successful solo and collaborative photographer.  She also photographs events for Patrick McMullan–how Zach & Carrie originally began their friendship.

Zach Hyman was always attracted to theater for the excitement and attention, and after graduating high-school in Pennsylvania, he attended North Carolina School of the Arts for Conservatory Training in the Theater Arts. After two years, Zach decided to leave school and pursue his ongoing passion for photography. In August of 2009 his first solo exhibition, titled Decent Exposures, gained worldwide press and exposure with his series of photographs of nude models in public places like the subway.  Then, in September of 2009 he made the front page of Page Six after his model got arrested during a shoot at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Zach was then approached by MTV to be featured on their successful reality show, The City.

Zach has worked on many creative/fashion oriented projects including a second exhibition titled Glitterous, a collaboration with Carrie Shaltz. Work from both exhibitions have been displayed in group shows in New York and Los Angeles with artists including; David LaChapelle, Ryan McGinley, Herb Ritts, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Nan Goldin. He couldn’t be more humbled and honored to show with his idols and inspirations. Zach continues to work on solo & collaborative projects in addition to photographing celebrity events for Patrick McMullan.
