Who Am I ?

ERICA RESNICK

An Introduction to ERICA REDNICK

April 2011

1: Who am I?

Erica Resnick. Mixed Media Artist. (I am one of two things: I am a nice girl from a nice family from a nice suburban New Jersey town complete with nice morals and a sense of social justice OR I am a nihilistic, pre-apocalyptic artist intent on creating art that can double as deadly weapons. Either way… I am in love with the outcast, I am in love with the desiccated tatters of my heart and I love to dance to ’80s music on a Saturday night).

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

My artwork is inspired by my grandfather’s hardware store: metal, rust, wood, oxidation, key shavings, and odd bits. Book project in the works. Phosphorescence Magazine’s June 2011 issue will feature some of my photos. My work can be seen in various galleries around the country as well.

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

From Dirty Jersey, and I think I’ll stay.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

No hero… I do have a few select people that I find more interesting and wonderful than most.

5: What book is your bible?

Tom Robbins’ Jitterbug Perfume reminds me that I CAN live forever.

6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

Love animals. Hate when people eat them.
Love music. Hate people that wear the bands’ t-shirt to the concert.
Love french fries. Hate that they are the devil’s food and I can’t eat them.
Love scary movies. Hate watching them alone.

7: What is your raison d’être?
I exist for art and love (the order is most certainly interchangeable).

8: What is your favorite color?

Currently quite obsessed with blue.

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

I like boys who like comic books. Does that count?

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

The New Museum (ahhh), Hangai (yum), The Campbell Apartment (I only went once, however; I felt like I was in the board game Clue).

11: What turns you on?

HEARING: The sound of Perry Farrell’s voice.
SMELL: Cotton Candy.
TOUCH: Reorganizing my CDs, alphabetically of course.
SIGHT: Honest eyes.
TASTE: Jack Daniels with a splash of Ginger.

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

What can you tell me about your mother?

Erica Resnick is relatively new to the professional art scene. Within a very short time, however, her iconoclastic voice has landed her work in galleries throughout Northern New Jersey and New York. It is perhaps the lonely and often brutal images that speak most strongly to the mortality in all of us.

Miss Resnick’s art is a juxtaposition of beauty, death, and neglect. Miss Resnick’s choice of presentation is just one more aspect that sets her photographs apart from others. She utilizes an array of burnt wood, distressed nails, metal, and rust to frame her photos. Her use of mixed media lends another layer of desperate, forgotten loveliness to every one of her pieces.

In addition, Miss Resnick has begun to delve into hanging sculpture. While her photos hint at humanity’s transience, Miss Resnick’s sculpture proves it. Her newest works are a visual cacophony of corroded metal and found objects. While Miss Resnick’s vision may pierce the psyche, her art – quite literally – may pierce the flesh.
