Who Am I ?

SHIEN LEE

May 2011

1: Who am I?

I’m Shien Lee.

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

I’m the creator and producer of Dances of Vice, a nightlife sensation known for highly stylized anachronistic and new romantic events. I also offer creative event services for corporate and private clients through my event agency, Shien Lee Creative Group.

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

I’m from Taiwan. I lived in Honolulu, Taipei, Prague, and Montreal before moving to New York, but I think I’m here to stay. This city has really got a hold on me.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

I admire different people for their different merits and accomplishments, but I don’t idolize. That being said, my mother was the most beautiful, brave, and selfless person I knew. My personal hero, for sure.

5: What book is your bible?

I wouldn’t take the word of any one book as the truth. My journal is my bible, because it’s my link to my past and future self, a tool of self-discovery. However, no reading delivers quite such a thrill as Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment or The Brothers Karamazov. I’ve read them each a number of times.

6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

I love meeting people who are genuine and treat other people with kindness and respect. I can’t stand vain and selfish individuals who revel in negative excitement and attention. I hate when people air their personal dirty laundry on Facebook. I love romanticism, surrealism, humor, and–I don’t care if it makes me sound goth-melancholia.

7: What is your raison d’être?

To minimize the distance between my dreams and reality. Perhaps someday I’ll even prefer reality to my daydreaming. In the meantime, my events are a temporary venue by which to transcend material and social boundaries of everyday life and meet other eccentric, beauty-seeking dreamers. I live for that.

8: What is your favorite color?

Sage Green. The color of good green tea ice cream.

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

I haven’t read any superhero comics, but Bugs Bunny is my biggest cartoon hero. Adventurous, witty, bitchy, looks good in drag – what’s not to love?

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

When I’m not hosting my own parties, I prefer intimate gatherings with friends at home or at my favorite café, Café Reggio.

11: What turns you on?

Poetry, ingenuity, mystery, rebellion, and killer style.

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

Q: How do you look for love and what do you do with it when you find it?

A: I look for love in every opportunity, and cherish the people and things I love. All things come to pass, so I take no pleasure for granted, great or small.

Shien Lee is the creator of Dances of Vice, a New York nightlife sensation which attracts a decadent menagerie of dandies, aesthetes, and dreamers who gather in shared enthusiasm for the music, fashion, culture, and beauty of times forgotten. Dances of Vice incorporates a myriad of anachronistic and New Romantic influences in Dadaistic celebration of the liberating effects of beauty, fantasy, and surrealism.
