DARLING DIARIES: LACHAPELLE LAND

The Intimate Confessions of Darian Darling

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Dear Diary,

Tonight’s entry must be split into two parts because it was just that damn epic. First off, I decided to take in a bit of art and culture and check out iconic pop-art photographer David LaChapelle’s latest exhibit at Lever House, a photo-based art installation called “From Darkness to Light.” Also, it was a clever excuse to have a kiki session with my friend and David’s muse, international bombshell Amanda Lepore, and take advantage of the open bar! As you know, Diary…I’m no fool. Being a gorgeous Spring day, I decided to go for a “Barbie goes to Boca Raton” look and don an extremely unacceptable sheer vintage jumpsuit from 1981 with gold sequin panties underneath. I figure if you’re gonna see my panties anyway, they should at least be somewhat exciting, no? Lever House is located on 53rd and Park Ave, an area of the city I rarely have reason to venture to. On my leisurely walk from the subway through Midtown East, I seemed to attract quite a bit of attention–especially as I crossed 5th Ave. (a.k.a. Tourist Hell). I’m not really sure what the big deal was?

Arriving to the event around 6:30, I noticed it was already quite packed. The theme of the installation was 1st grade art crafts, re-imagined through an adult lens (i.e paper chains, stickers and collages featuring nude models). Quickly scoring a glass of champagne, I scanned the room for Amanda. After finding her amid a sea of admirers and paparazzi,  we had some overdue girl talk and discussed her soon to be released debut album and concert at the Highline Ballroom on the 25th. She was very proud to point out her paper chain portrait, prominently displayed at eye-level….and prominently displaying her infamous fully functional vagina!

As far as attendees were concerned, a LaChapelle event will always draw out celebs and NYC scenesters alike! Actress Uma Thurman made an appearance, as did heiress and fashionista Daphne Guinness, hip-hop pioneer Fab 5 Freddy, legendary NYC subway graffiti artist Lee Quiñones, supermodel Hana Soukupová, celebrity makeup artist Sharon “Mama Makeup” Gault (of Madonna: Truth or Dare fame), NYC nightlife icon Kenny Kenny, DJ/rapper Cazwell, and The Ones’ Paul Alexander.

After drinking as much free booze as I could get my hands on, it was time for a quick dinner and then off to my hosting gig, LADYLAND at the Hudson Hotel. You’ll have to wait until Part II for those tawdry details, sweet Diary.
