Who Am I ?

HEIDI KELSO

An Introduction to HEIDI KELSO

June 2011

1. Who am I?

Heidi Kelso.

2. What do you do and what projects are you working on?

I started in the music business and then went into television, producing high profile broadcast concert specials, award shows, and network tent poles.

Now I have a media company called HK Media Group. We produce broadcast specials and create original content in the digital and new media space, mostly for music and fashion projects.

I am also a creative consultant for brands and I act as a connector to tastemakers, celebrities, and music artists, developing concepts and find co-branding opportunities. I also consult on large-scale events and help oversee the big picture by making sure every department is in sync, every goal can be executed properly, and the event is on budget.

I’ve done a lot of charity/non-profit projects. Everything from the Paris Concert for Amnesty International, The Beastie Boy’s Tibet Freedom Concerts to Raising Malawi, hosted by Madonna and Gucci. Two weeks ago a did a project with the White House and Viacom called “Race To The Top’. I worked with kids from a magnet school in Newark and they were amazing.

Next up is an event with Mario Batali and Bing, and developing projects for my client Becka Diamond.

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

I’m originally from Connecticut, but I moved to the East Village when I was seventeen, before college. New York is my home but I travel all over the world and spend one to two months each winter out of the country, usually in Bali, India or Thailand. I’m going to Los Angeles in June.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

My parents. They are just really solid people. They’re about love, support, and family.

5: What book is your bible?

Anything written by A.A. Gill, Toby Young, David Sedaris, or Simon Doonan.

6: What are some things you love?  And some things you hate?

I love exploring the most beautiful beaches around the world and finding exotic locations where the culture is extremely different then my own.

I also love Isabel Marant, New York City Custom Leather, white tee shirts, ballet, Shelter Island summers, Morocco, the Oman desert and Jay-Z.

I hate discrimination and extremists. I’m a Libra…I’m all about balance.

7: What is your raison d’être?

I’m still figuring that out. I don’t think I’ve reached my potential. I have more work to do and more to learn.

8: What is your favorite color?

Light pink. I had a baby pink road case when I was touring in the music business.

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

I don’t read comic books.

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

I still love Boom Boom Room and Le Bain when the roof is open. I like Fat Radish a lot. Some of my favorite places are old school. Elaine’s epitomized NY when I was young, 21 Club for the same reason, Indochine and Knickerbocker are also old school favorites.

11: What turns you on?

Brains and confidence.

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

Q: If you changed careers and did something else what would it be?

A: I would be probably be an anthropologist following the Touareg around the Sahara. I would also open a Poquito mas in NYC. I would like a second career sourcing goods and materials from around the world for designers and fashion houses. My first business was in Bali designing clothing for stores in Japan and might head back in that direction someday.
