Who Am I ?
1: Who am I?
A lucky woman with a wonderful husband, a loving family, and a meaningful job.
2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?
I run DKMS, which is a bone marrow donor center. I am always working on recruiting new lifesaving bone marrow donors. It’s a hard task because there are a lot of misconceptions about donating. People don’t realize how easy it is to save a life.
3: Where are you from and where are you going?
I am going from powerless child to empowered woman. I lost my mother to leukemia when I was only fourteen and now I use that experience to help other families overcome the struggles that my family and I faced when my mother was sick.
4: Who is your biggest hero?
My mother, for teaching me what love is. My father, for teaching me how to pass on that love to save others. He started DKMS after my mother’s death and has taught me that it is important to have a purpose in life. This has made me who I am.
5: What book is your bible?
6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?
Love: good food, nice wine, the beach, sleep, massages, having cozy dinners with friends, playing with my nieces, and recruiting bone marrow donors.
Hate: cold weather, waking up early, when people say “It can’t be done!”, and asking for favors (yet, I always have to, working for a non-profit).
7: What is your raison d’être?
To use my mother’s legacy to save lives.
8: What is your favorite color?
9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?
Batman. He is most like a DKMS donor: a regular person with no super powers who has the ability to save lives. Bone marrow donors are real superheroes.
10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?
My sun drenched terrace.
11: What turns you on?
12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?
Are you a registered bone marrow donor?
Katharina Harf is Chief Operating Officer of DKMS Americas, the fastest growing bone marrow donor center in the United States (www.GetSwabbed.org). Harf has been instrumental in the development and growth of the organization. Today DKMS is the largest bone marrow donor center in the world with over 2.7 million registered donors. Under Katharina Harf’s leadership DKMS Americas has registered more than 200,000 donors and has facilitated more than 350 life-saving transplants. More than 25,000 DKMS donors have helped save lives by donating their bone marrow. Katharina’s determination to recruit as many donors as possible so that one day all leukemia and other blood cancer patients find their life-saving match comes from losing her mother to leukemia at the young age of fourteen.
