Who Am I ?

June 2011

1: Who am I?

I’m pretty sure that I’m Luke Blair.

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

I’m a director. Right now, I am working on a new short film/commercial hybrid piece and that is going well. A fashion film or music video may be next.

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

My parents are British and I was raised in Toronto, so I have dual citizenship. I now live in London. I miss Toronto, though, and may go back. I would like to try New York or LA sometime if the right opportunity came up. I’ll go where the work is.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

I have two. Stanley Kubrick and my father Steve Blair. He is an advertising creative who taught me the value of craft when I was a just a kid.

5: What book is your bible?

I don’t think I have found that book yet. I like the writing of Paul Auster and how he deals with the theme of chance. I also like the writing of David Gilmour, who I used to follow as a film critic on television. The David Lynch book Catching The Big Fish was very inspiring to me. I read it in a few hours. I was absorbed and felt a real connection with it.

6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

I love film, art, and photography. I like to talk about ideas and how to execute them. I get excited about a collaboration, meeting a new artist, etc. I hate cynicism, fear of trying, and lack of patience.

7: What is your raison d’être?

I don’t know. I believe no one does really. I just do what feels right, develop my craft, and try to be honest about it.

8: What is your favorite color?

Blue, maybe black?

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

These days, it’s Superman.

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

The airport, because I’d like the opportunity to move to NYC.

11: What turns you on?

The women of Twin Peaks and Mad Men.

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

Does anyone know who they really are?

Luke Blair is an up and coming British-Canadian director of short films, music videos and recently commercials. His eye for composition and careful orchestration of shots create a purposeful narrative drive inspired by ‘pure cinema.’
