SIX OF ONE: RAUL HIGUERA
Six Quick Questions
With One of My Favorite Artists
In the Field with Lori Zimmer
Raul Higuera’s gorgeous photographs portray the fashion elite–Karl Lagerfeld, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Dior’s Victoire de Castellane, Hermes’ Pierre Hardy–in as much glamour as the lines themselves represent. Higuera’s fashion photographs highlight the art form of the garment, while also exuding his own creative form and composition. His images are not about the clothes, and yet, on the other hand, completely are. He has a unique gift of creating photographs that toe the line between fashion and art.
This impressive resume only becomes more so, as Higuera is only 30 years young. Higuera recently closed his first solo show, “Couture Shock,” at Vered Gallery in East Hampton.
1. What are you currently obsessed with?
Zen and staying focused in the present. I’m paying a lot of attention to how we perceive and look at things, trying as much to be involved in the moment.
2. Describe your work in three words
Surreal. Inspiring. Energetic.
3. What are your favorite recent exhibitions?
Francois Morellet at Center Pompidou in Paris. I love how he makes the visitor interact with the light and that he’s very clean and simple in his approach to color and design.
4. What is your favorite place and why?
Paris, because it has given me a perspective on fashion and culture. It has also taught me how to look at things.
5. What is your go to karaoke song?
6.What book has most influenced you?
My family photo album.
