1: Who am I?

I am Helen Pontani, a dancer in the NYC Burlesque Scene, a member of the World Famous Pontani Sisters Dance trio, and a choreographer.

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

Currently I am dancing solo in shows all over New York City and touring all over the world with my group The World Famous Pontani Sisters. I am also working on starting my own dance company this fall. Dance choreography is one of my passions.

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

I’m originally from Detroit. I have been living in Brooklyn for the last twelve years, and see myself living all over the world. I am ready to relocate–just not sure where I am going next. New Orleans, Paris, LA.We shall see!

4: Who is your biggest hero?

Katherine Dunham, and my mom for always having a smile.

5: What book is your bible?

I love to read biographies about dancers, Josephine Baker, Marie Antoinette, rock stars, and courtesans.Reading a really good biography always inspires me.

6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

I love champagne, food, flying first class, fishnets, feathers, really high heels, cheese, dining out.
I hate waiting in line at the post office.

7: What is your raison d’être?

To create beautiful things that will make the senses explode!

8: What is your favorite color?


9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

Catwoman: The Feline Fatale. You can’t go wrong with a black vinyl jumpsuit and knee high boots.

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

I have two. Chez Josephine and Duane Park. They both make me feel like I have been transported to another time and place.

11: What turns you on?

Shoes, garters, and champagne. As far as in a person, someone who is confident, smells really good, and wears sock garters.

What is your favorite curse word?

After making her way to the Big Apple to fulfill her dreams of studying at the Alvin Ailey School of Dance and performing in modern dance companies, Helen decided it was time for false eyelashes and rhinestones. The World Famous Pontani Sisters was born. Since its inception, the trio of temptresses has changed the face of burlesque as we know it. Helen has dazzled audiences from the gritty big top of Coney Island to the glittering lights of Hollywood, known as the ‘Tapping Tornado’ in a two year run in the off Broadway show, This is Burlesque, dozens of national and international tours while making frequent appearances on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Gossip Girl, Queer Eye, MTV, and VH1 among others. Appearing in show stopping performances that have earned critical acclaim from the Times, Post, Daily News, Village Voice, and Time Out magazine. Helen has become a tap dance sensation in the world of burlesque. With her flirtatious tapping, fabulous show girl costumes dripping in rhinestones and feathers. She is sure to bedazzle you!
