You Know Me !

July 2011

1. How do we know you?

My arrival in NY seems to have coincided with Patrick’s rise as paparazzi extraordinaire. I arrived in NY to work at the Pyramid Club from Atlanta in 1984. Many people know me as the founder, organizer and emcee of Wigstock, an outdoor drag festival held around Labor Day from 1985-2005. Over 20 years to it grew to attract tens of thousands of revelers and became what some have called a hipper version of gay pride. In addition to every drag queen on earth, Boy George, Debbie Harry, RuPaul, John Cameron Mitchell, Vickie Sue Robinson and Antony of the Johnsons all performed.

2. What is your latest project?

I’m appearing each Monday night on LOGO on Rupaul’s Drag U as the Dean Of Drag. And I DJ and perform regularly in NYC. I just posted a popular youtube video about foreskin which you can see here. The video is NSFW (but this is your sex issue so a little nastiness is in order)!

3. Where are you living?

I’ve been in Greenwich Village for about 16 years. I can’t imagine ever leaving NYC. The city’s not what it was, but then again neither am I!

4. What don’t we know about you?

That Patrick’s employee Sam and I used to flirt at Disco 2000!

5. What is your favorite travel destination?

I still enjoy Miami Beach, London, and San Francisco regularly. And I would love to visit Brazil.

6. What inspires you?

Compassion, honesty, and a wicked sense of humor.

7. If not yourself, who would you be?

Barbara Eden, Charo or Patti Labelle!

8. What book is your bible?

Patrick Dennis wrote the book upon which Auntie Mame is based. His other book, Little Me, is an absolute riot and I treasure it. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

9. What is your favorite word?

10. Who is your biggest hero?

AIDS activist Larry Kramer has opened so many people’s eyes and I’m one of them. I’m so thrilled that his revival of A Normal Heart is tearing up Broadway–the night I went the entire audience was sobbing over this gripping drama. And as style icons go I love Grace Jones like no other.

11. How would you define success?

A mixture of financial success and pride in what you’ve accomplished. So many of us get caught up in just paying bills that we let things that are important to us slide because they aren’t profitable. At the end if the day (or at the end of your life) you really need both.

12. What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

Who the hell is writing these questions? KIDDING!
