Who Am I ?
1: Who am I?
My name is Stephanie Hague, knitter-extraordinaire, and founder of Pretty Offensive.
2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?
I pay my bills by working at an ad agency, but my passion is provocative knitting: tit tops, fuck scarves…and I’m working on a pattern for penis pants. Right now I’m working on a custom tit top for Stoya, and I’m gearing up for a trunk show in September. It seems far away, but it’s really not, especially when you work with the slowest medium possible.
3: Where are you from and where are you going?
I’m from the great Midwest, and I think that Pretty Offensive is the unstoppable product of my Midwest background trying to reason with my New York sensibilities.
As far as where I’m going? Beyond somewhere warm this winter, it’s all TBD.
4: Who is your biggest hero?
My grandma–she raised 4 kids as a single mom. Tell me that is not heroic.
5: What book is your bible?
Stitch and Bitch. It’s how I learned to knit and a constant reference. There is also The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. Not only is margarita in the title but also it’s an amazing work of fiction (and highly recommended).
6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?
Love: Unseeming beauty. Dreaming. Running my fingers through grass.
Hate: Mean people (unless it’s me).
7: What is your raison d’être?
Laughter and creativity.
8: What is your favorite color?
Yellow. They say it stimulated 40% more brain activity.
9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?
Movie companies killed all the good ones.
10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?
It depends what I’m feeling like. Dive Bar: St. Jerome, Elbow Rubbing: Madame Wong parties, Classy Bitch: Gramercy Park Hotel Roof, Relaxation: McCarren Park
11: What turns you on?
Good design and typography. My boyfriend’s soap.
12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?
If you had to pick a theme song for your life, what would it be?
Born into a crafty family in Iowa, Stephanie Hague was destined to inherit the power of turning tangled string into woven order. It was when she moved to New York City, however, that she began to harness her true power for mostly knitted evil, turning it into an offensive but pretty art form. Her Pretty Offensive work can be seen at Tomahawk Salon in Bushwick and on Etsy–the first stop in her fucking knitted domination. And yet somehow she manages to balance her Pretty Offensive passion by night with her full-time gig in the ad world by day. She’s a true Gemini.
