Who Am I ?
1: Who am I?
Kerry McLaney, some of my close friends call me Ker-bear, which I’ve always thought is cute.
2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?
I would like to think of myself as a ‘Creative Art Director’. I recently launched my own design company, 305 Creative Group, specializing in branding, marketing, and photography. Located in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District in Miami.
I am also one of the founding members and Creative Director of Miami’s Independent Thinkers, an organization dedicated to supporting local artists and musicians. We’ve produced six major events over the past couple years and showcased over 300 artists and many, many musicians. We are currently focusing on Art Basel | Miami Beach; the most influential art fair in the world, held in early December. We’re revamping our website and will put out a call-to-artists right after the summer.
3: Where are you from and where are you going?
I was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. My family had a hotel and a few casinos there. Luckily, they all survived the earthquake. I moved to Miami at sixteen with my mother after years of political turmoil, then to South Beach after high school for a few years and traveled as much as possible with my camera and tons of film. I finally ended up at Savannah College of Art and Design for undergrad and grad school, which was the best decision because I got a tremendous art education. Then moved back to Miami…I just love it here. Not sure I’ll be going anywhere anytime soon. Miami is the best place to be right now.
4: Who is your biggest hero?
My mother. She has always been extremely supportive of my ‘artsy’ lifestyle. I recently gave a presentation at the Bass Museum and, of course, she was there. She tries to make it to most of my events and shows.
5: What book is your bible?
The Art of Happiness, for sure.
6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?
I adore my family, friends, and Miami, especially Wynwood! I have an office in the Mitrani Warehouse. It’s so inspiring to walk around this emerging artsy neighborhood, it changes daily. New murals popping up, gallery walks, indie coffee shops such as Lester’s and Panther, chic restaurants such as Wynwood Kitchen & Bar, Joeys and Jimmy’z, creative retailers and spaces like Ecoist and Plant the Future.
Hate? Hmm, this unpredictable hurricane weather isn’t my favorite thing. It could be bright and sunny one minute, then completely stormy the next, then sunny again.
7: What is your raison d’être?
Chardonnay? Maybe, but I’ll go with art.
8: What is your favorite color?
Green, of course, I’m a natural red head…but specifically chartreuse.
9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?
Wonder Woman? I know that’s a bit cliché, but I never really got into comic books. I know she was a bad ass with those magical armbands though.
10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?
I don’t really party when I go up to NYC, I get enough of that in Miami. I mostly hit up the galleries and museums in the daytime. MOMA is a favorite and the Chelsea Arts district too.
11: What turns you on?
12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?
What is something most people don’t know about you?
Kerry McLaney launched her own design company, 305 Creative Group, specializing in branding, marketing, and photography. Also, one of the founding members and Creative Director of Miami’s Independent Thinkers, an organization dedicated to supporting local artists and musicians.
