Who Am I ?

August 2011

1: Who am I?

That’s a loaded question. If I had to tie it down, I’d say an underground filmmaker based in New York City with an obsession for fashion. But, who wants to be tied down? I mean… unless you’re into that sort of thing.

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

I love writing but unfortunately every time I decide to write a script it turns into something I didn’t expect so teaming up with writer Michael Assip has been a dream. I’m in post-production for a short film called “7 Minutes” in which a girl is caught, well, screwing a corpse by her mother and close friends. Next, I’m directing “The Ick” also written by Assip that deals with a group of friends that, by sleeping with one another, cause a virus to spread that makes people insane.

Do I dare mention I’m also working on an erotic novel?

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

I’m a New Yorker born and raised. As far as a future destination, I don’t like thinking that far in advance.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

I don’t necessarily have a hero but my biggest influence would have to be John Waters. More than anyone else I’ve come across, he’s given me a reason to accept my indifference to society even within a subculture.

5: What book is your bible?

My Face for the World to See by Candy Darling.

6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

Well, I love film, but I also do a decent amount of reading. It’s unfortunate that some people claim that they don’t have time for it anymore. If only TV didn’t exist.

Local suburban thrift stores also bring enjoyment to my life. Find the nearest impoverished town and head directly to their Salvation Army. Trust me, it won’t be picked over.

1950’s Doo Wop and Rockabilly music play a big role in my life, too. I have quite a good collection of ’45s and it’s still growing.

Things I hate? Where do I begin?

7: What is your raison d’être?

I’m still wondering about that myself. I’ll let you know when I find out. I know underground art has a lot to do with it.

8: What is your favorite color?

Green. It’s always been in my wardrobe.

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

Superheroes bore me. I never liked the individual who always comes out on top. I like the underdog; the villain. When it comes to comic books I’d go with The Joker anytime over Batman. His fashion sense is also pretty impressive. He’d fit in well with the Club Kids.

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

I don’t have a favorite. Give me a place where good people and creativity abound and I’ll be there.

11: What turns you on?

That’s just dirty. Normally, I don’t kiss and tell. If you’re lucky you might just find out.

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

What is the most disturbing film you’ve ever seen?

Kevin Novinski is an underground filmmaker, photographer, and writer based in New York City. He is currently working on a continuous portrait series of various unique New York artists and often writes for the nightlife scene.
