EVERYONE PREFERS THE BLONDS

A Conversation with THE BLONDS

By Tyler Malone

September 2011

In the iconic Howard Hawks film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the always glamorous Marilyn Monroe makes the classic claim that “diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” That may be true, but there is another best friend to any truly fashionable lady: The Blonds. Get your hands on any of their fabulous looks, or even just follow their style lead, and you’re certain to be the belle of the ball.

They’ve created pieces for Lady Gaga, for Katy Perry, for Britney Spears, for Rihanna, for all sorts of modern-day style icons–anyone who, like them, is all about “gratuitous glamour.”

These two purveyors of gratuitous glamour first met 12 years ago when, on the night of Phillipe’s prom, he decided to hit up the Roxy instead. David, also at the Roxy that evening, saw “a sparkly fairy over in the corner” which happened to be Phillipe in a sheer top covered with crystals. David came over and asked Phillipe to dance, and they’ve been together ever since, creating fashion together as The Blonds for a number of years now. Their shows are always a highlight of the season–equal parts spectacle, style and substance, and always, always, overflowing with that gratuitous glamour that defines their Blond ambition.

Whether or not it is true that gentlemen prefer blondes, it certainly is true that everyone prefers THE BLONDS.

Tyler Malone: So how does your partnership work out? Do you have certain roles that each of you fill or are you both kind of doing everything together?

David Blond: Phillipe and I have the same aesthetic so it is easy for us to work together, but Phillipe has no organizational skills so that is all me, Phillipe loves to do all the fun stuff but none of the business part.

TM: Who are some of your favorite style icons? Either current or past…

Phillipe Blond: We love so many, here are a few: Top of our list is Ms. Marilyn Monroe, Jessica Rabbit, Donna Jordan, Jayne Mansfield, Mamie Van Dooran, Playboy Bunnies from the 50s and 60s, Barbie, and Carmen Miranda. We love mermaids, especially the bitchy ones from the original Peter Pan cartoon, and we love all the Disney princesses. And, of course, Madonna!

TM: What would you say is the defining quality of your work? In a word, what is it that you think makes a piece a Blonds piece?

DB: What makes a Blonds piece special is that when you are wearing a Blonds piece you feel sexy, confidant, glamourous, and you can be sure that no other woman in the room will be wearing what you are.

TM: We all know the famous Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, but it appears you’ve made ladies prefer Blonds too–as in every fashionable woman can’t help but be in love with your work. What do you think makes you able to connect with fashion-conscious women in such a way?

PB: Woman want to look beautiful, sexy, glam, and powerful…and our designs help them fulfill these dreams.

TM: What’s been your proudest moment of your careers thus far?

DB: We were so excited to have one of the pieces that was made for Rihanna be in a huge exhibit at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum as an iconic outfit from her career…for us that was the ultimate.

TM: Do you have a favorite and least favorite thing about one another?

PB: Like any other couple we get on each others nerves–I mean it has been 12 years–but at the end of the day we are still together and very much in love…otherwise The Blonds would not exist.

TM: What is your current inspiration?

DB: As always its all about glamour, glamour and more glamour! But you will have to wait til the show to see what we’ve cooked up this season.

TM: Well, is there anything that you can tell us about your upcoming line and show?

PB: Our upcoming line is exciting because we are working with new crystals that we have never worked with before, they are huge and sparkle more than the stars in the sky!

TM: Where do you see yourselves in ten years?

DB: Hopefully by then we will have built The Blonds into a household brand that is attainable to everyone. We want to do perfumes, menswear, shoes, jewelry…EVERYTHING you can image…but BLOND.

The Blonds are a fashion design duo made up of David and Phillipe Blond.
