A Spotlite on Maybelline Spokesmodel LISALLA MONTENEGRO
By Lori Zimmer
Lovely Lisalla dreamed of being a doctor as a child in Goias, Brazil, but lucky for us she decided to take a detour in the world of modeling. At sweet sixteen, she was modeling locally in Brazil, before being plucked up by a scout and whisked away to New York. Now, Lisalla graces the pages of the famed Maybelline calendar along with many iconic beauties–the most exciting part of her career thus far.
The last six years have been a whirlwind of Bergdorf catalogs, then runway shows, then Vogue, Nylon, and ads for L’Oreal. Lisalla loves the adventure and creativity the fashion world brings, diving into each project with enthusiasm.
Now a New York girl, the Maybelline model noshes on sushi at Bond St, or can be found sipping the authentic cocktails on the weekends at Esperanto. Lisalla’s website opens with a slow, sexy video of the lovely lady putting on make-up (as if she needs it) and ends in an innocent smile, showing the full range of the beauty of Ms. Montenegro.
Lori Zimmer: At the age of twenty-two, you are already an industry veteran, having appeared in everything from runway, to Vogue, and Nylon to campaigns for L’Oreal and Maybelline New York. In fact, you told us one of your turning points was a campaign for L’Oreal in 2006. Did you know what was happening at the time? Could you feel that this commercial shot was going to be your big break?
Lisalla Montenegro: I was definitely excited about the L’Oreal campaign because I knew it was such a great brand and it would help give people a chance to see more of me. I thought it would open some doors in my career, but I never dreamed that it would lead to such amazing things as it did!
LZ: You originally aspired to be a doctor, but ended up gracing us with your beauty instead. How has the modeling world treated you? Do you have any other career goals in mind for the near future?
LM: When I was a little girl it was a dream of mine to be a doctor and help people, but life brought me in a different direction. I truly love modeling, and it’s allowed me to have so many wonderful experiences and travel to such incredible places. Right now, I’m just focusing on modeling and living my life, and we’ll see if one day life chooses to take me in another direction.
LZ: What’s your favorite aspect of the fashion world? Do you like the hectic excitement of walking in fashion week? Or do you prefer shooting on location?
LM: My favorite thing about fashion is that every season brings something new and different, with fresh colors and styles. The looks are always getting crazier and more fun! I also love that people are getting more into fashion in their everyday life, and more people are embracing their individual styles; I think that’s so special.
Walking in fashion shows and shooting on location are so different, and I love them both. Walking down a runway feels very glamorous and you really feel like a model, but shooting is always a new and exciting experience. You get to wear beautiful clothes, go to exotic locations, and just have fun with it. It’s kind of like playing dress up.
LZ: What is your favorite look–do you like to get dressed up or are you a jeans and sneakers kind of girl?
LM: I definitely like to dress up! I always want to wear something new; if I wear jeans today, the next day I want to wear a dress, and the day after that I’ll wear a skirt. I love clothes, and I hate to repeat!
LZ: You moved to New York from Goias, Brazil, a few years ago. What are some of your favorite places in your adopted city?
LM: I love Esperanto in the East Village, they have the best cocktails. Bond St is definitely my favorite sushi.
LZ: You signed with Maybelline New York in 2010. What are some of your favorite experiences Maybelline New York has brought you so far?
LM: I had so much fun shooting the Maybelline calendar. All the girls were different characters, and we had the most beautiful, fun make-up. Maybelline always has something new going on, and it’s always such a good time. The girls are fantastic, and it’s the best thing that’s happened in my career so far.
