Resort Wear Brings Together Art and Fashion

December 2011

To speak about fashion is to speak about a form of art, and when the two collide a masterpiece is created (no pun intended).

Rodarte sent a dress down the runway picturing Van Gogh’s infamous Starry Night mural. Or who can forget Alexander McQueen’s 1999 display of his pristine white dress spray painted black and yellow? Designers are gearing up for their resort collections and presenting their clothing as canvases covered in brush strokes and murals.

Alice and Olivia’s long sleeve mid-length dress looks as if it is a dripping water color painting, creating a sophisticated look by it’s soft palette. Keeping true to the brand’s edgy designs, Helmut Lang presents a white sleeveless tank dress with prominent ink blots on one side, leaving the rest with lighter smudges. Only Lang can make a white dress look even better dirty and stained. Balenciaga chose to paint flowers and petals on their white shirt, giving an artsy touch to the staple white t-shirt. Darker brushstokes with tones of greens grace Jil Sander’s pencil skirt for a richer elegance. Pair with a white or black tank or long sleeve to make this look more casual. Inspired by futurism, Zero + Mariacornjeo uses a range of colors for their kaleidoscope satin twill dress. Definitely a statement dress, keep the rest of the accessories simple with this one. Givency and Stella McCartney use a different medium besides paint to create their Hawaiian tropic vision. From Givenchy’s spring/summer 2012 pre-collection, perfectly constructed paradise flowers looks as though they’ve come to life in an almost digital effect. The base’s silk blue brings life to the pink, orange, and yellows of the design. Stella McCartney’s Hawaiian mural brings the laid back surfer look to high fashion. Palm trees, irises, waves, and all this top screams resort wear. I don’t know about you, but we are definitely ready for a vacation now.
