Who Am I ?
JAIME RYAN HEINTZ
1: Who am I?
My name is Jaime Ryan Heintz and I am just some guy wandering around trying to make sense of the world through images and stories.
2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?
I spend most of my time reading books–a lot of stuff by filmmakers, at the moment, and the new Murakami novel–and watching movies with brief moments of output. Over the last half-year or so, I’ve put a feature screenplay together that I’m fairly proud of and I am spending my time revising it and working with my team to get it into production.
3: Where are you from and where are you going?
I am from a small city just outside of Los Angeles and I’d like to go around the world a few times before shooting out into space at some point.
4: Who is your biggest hero?
If you mean artistically, it’s always a tie between Stanley Kubrick and Akira Kurosawa because they always threaded an elegantly beautiful line between art and “commercial” filmmaking. Their work is accessible to a wide audience and it’s not until one is sucked in that they really start to challenge notions of reality and what it is to be human. If you mean biggest hero in my life, it’s my closest friends, without a doubt, and they know who they are.
5: What book is your bible?
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami changed everything. It was the first time I read something and thought an author was writing something for me (completely vain, I know, but I really can’t describe it any other way). It really gave me permission to follow my instincts, creatively. I’ve always been intrigued by the intersection of dreams and reality and that novel could not have come to me at a better time.
6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?
I love passion, attention to detail, craft, empathy, generosity, intelligence, terribly inappropriate humor.
I am not a fan of impatience, boredom, cruelty, self-imposed ignorance, bands composed primarily of Gibson guitars (this is a serious obstacle for me), insistence on being right (and others wrong…unless it’s funny).
7: What is your raison d’être?
If I can connect with just a few people in my life and through my work, I will be a happy happy person–blissed out of my mind.
8: What is your favorite color?
BLACK (in all caps).
9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?
10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?
11: What turns you on?
Intelligence and its sibling, humor.
12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the
What keeps you up at night?
Jaime Ryan Heintz was born in 1980 just outside of Los Angeles, California, and is still active. His primary preoccupation is making films, so he has set himself up for a long life of heartbreak, disappointment, and martyrdom; oh, but what a glorious path.
