150 FILMS OF 2011: BEST TO WORST

Tyler Malone Counts Them Down

Film Insight by Tyler Malone

February 2012

I saw 150 films that were released in 2011, besting my record last year of seeing 110 films in 2010. With the Oscars coming up this Sunday, I wanted to list all the movies I saw here for you, like I did last year, in order from best to worst (in my humble estimation), with links to my reviews of the films.

Of course, all lists are merely attempts at momentarily ordering the chaos of life, and thus these films shift up and down the scale in relation to one another the more I think about them, or upon revisiting them. There were lots of surprises this year. Films I didn’t expect to be great turned out better than I could have imagined, and others that had some expectations built up with them ended up being major disappointments. Perhaps the greatest surprise though, for me, was realizing that my two favorite films of the year were both from Iranian directors (one working within the system, the other whose films are banned in his home country).

But, without further ado, I offer you here my general ordering of the films I saw that were released in 2011:
