February 2012

1: Who am I?

I am Meghan Cross, but you can call me Meg. I’m a dedicated dot-connector who likes to meet people everywhere and make sure they meet each other, especially if they’re creative.

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

I handle the PR and collaborative business development for StyleCaster Media Group. I make sure that everyone is included in the style conversation that’s driven by StyleCaster’s incredibly talented team. Right now, I’m thrilled to be working closely with 92YTribeca on the inaugural State of Style Summit, which will kick off NYFW on February 7th. The Summit will unite the industry’s most inspiring tastemakers, including Lauren Bush, Rebecca Miknoff, one of my professional role models, Tom Florio, and even my former Cornell Professor Van Dyke Lewis, in order to advance the conversation around new media and style. I can’t wait!

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

I was born in New York, grew up between London and Connecticut, and I will end up in Manhattan, with a detour of going pretty much everywhere.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

My mother always says, “Take your passion and make it happen;” and even though she stole that line from Flashdance, I’m pretty sure that makes her my hero. My dad’s cool too.

5: What book is your bible?

Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People is my ultimate simple-but-true guide to life, or at least to a life in PR. Every anecdote is somehow timeless, conveying sentiments that are often overlooked as trite. I also rely on Andy Warhol’s Philosophy of Andy Warhol whenever I’m in need of a solid one-liner.

6: What are some things you love?  And some things you hate?

I love discovering the incredible talent that grows right here in New York. From DJs and street artists to designers and entrepreneurs, I get such a kick out of helping friends go from start-up to success story. I love discovering new talent, exploring new places, making introductions, and sharing all of these things with family and friends.

Also, there’s nothing more fun than figure skating at Wollman Rink first thing in the morning. And there’s no better meal than doughnuts. I don’t hate a lot of things but passive aggressive e-mail lingo is my biggest pet peeve. But we can circle back to that upon request at EOD…thanks in advance.

7: What is your raison d’être?

Laughing hysterically with friends about something that would otherwise be totally humiliating.

8: What is your favorite color?

Red…no blue. I guess I’ll decide in November.

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

Betty Boop can pull off dark curly hair really well, so I’ve always been a little envious of her.

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

I plead the fifth, as whatever I say will no longer be a hot spot in two weeks. Note: Electric Room plays The Cure and The Clash in a graffiti-lit room that stays open past 5am. Just saying.

11: What turns you on?

There’s nothing more fulfilling than building meaningful relationships, and knowing that you and your friends can help each other out down the road.

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

At StyleCaster, we’re always saying how we bring ‘Style to the People.’ So my question would be, what does “Style to the People” mean? I think it’s just such a clever way to make style accessible to everyone. StyleCaster’s content team of incredibly talented trendsetters cranks out premium editorials by the minute, brilliant techies develop the social network that keeps us engaged, and all the while the company itself is run by business-savvy guys who I would consider ‘The Cool Kids.’ I’m excited to go to work every day, knowing that I’ll learn something from each of them. That sense of inclusion and accessibility is something that truly resonates with everything we produce.

Dedicated to connecting the dots both in and outside of the office, Meghan Cross spearheads public relations and collaborative business development initiatives at StyleCaster Media Group. As a long-time evangelist of emerging artists, Meghan produces events such as the State of Style Summit in order to bring #StyleToThePeople, and more literally bring StyleCaster to the press. Prior to joining the StyleCaster Team, she was responsible for the media strategy on behalf of foursquare, Skype, and a handful of other Silicon Alley & Valley favorites, at Kaplow Communications. Meghan graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Textile Science, and a concentration in Business Management. She resides in New York City (and couldn’t imagine it any other way).
