Who Am I ?

TERRI KAHAN

February 2012

1: Who am I?

New York-based modern and contemporary art advisor, dealer, and fundraiser.

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

I buy and sell art for private individuals, businesses, and institutions, and appraise and manage collections. I also raise money for arts organizations. Some of the things I am currently working on include, putting together a collection for a real estate developer, liquidating an estate, and raising money for a contemporary art fund.

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

I am a native New Yorker, born and raised in Manhattan. I am frequently traveling to Europe, but look forward to spending considerably more time in emerging markets, for both work and pleasure.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

Steve Jobs. He was a visionary entrepreneur with a commercial and aesthetic sensibility who was at the forefront of his industry, always pushing boundaries and never giving up.

5: What book is your bible?

Anna Karenina.

6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

I love art, design, jewelry, intelligent and creative people, and my dachshund.

I hate small-mindedness, arrogance, stupidity, and thoughtlessness.

7: What is your raison d’être?

To live in the moment.

8: What is your favorite color?

That’s a difficult question for someone in the art business. I love most colors. It really depends on how they are used. For my own personal style I gravitate to gray, beige, orange and taupe, black and navy.

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

Superwoman. She was smarter than Superman and looked better in hot pants!

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

I love Raoul’s. I’ve been going since I was eighteen.

11: What turns you on?

Intelligence and creativity.

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

Who is the most fascinating person you’ve ever met?

Kahan Fine Art is a private art advisory firm based in the heart of Manhattan’s upper east side. The firm was founded in 2001 by Terri Kahan and provides advisory services for private individuals, architects, decorators, real estate developers, corporations, and institutions, specializing primarily in Modern and Contemporary Art and working with seasoned and emerging collectors alike.

Terri Kahan’s interest in the art world started at a very early age. A native New Yorker, she grew up surrounded by art. Both parents have been prominent dealers and avid collectors. Alexander Kahan dealt in Post-Impressionist and Modernist work for over sixty years. He was involved in publishing the graphic works of Karel Appel, Alexander Calder, Matta and others, served as the exclusive North American agent for the prints or paintings of numerous artists including Marc Chagall and was instrumental in putting together a number of important collections, including the The Armand Hammer Collection. Jane Kahan runs the Jane Kahan Gallery. Founded in 1973, the gallery specializes in Modern master tapestries, paintings and prints, and is a member of FADA (Fine Art Dealers Association), IFPDA (International Fine Print Dealers Association), and CINOA (Confédération Internationale des Négociants en Oeuvre d’Art).

Ms. Kahan received her B.A. in Political Science from Brandeis University and spent many years working for a number of leading auction houses and galleries, including Christie’s auction house, Jane Kahan Gallery, Alexander Kahan Fine Arts and Gagosian Gallery. She then went on to obtain her MBA from Columbia University and subsequently founded and launched one of the first online art business called Onview.com, which worked with 250 of the most globally prominent fine art galleries. The site was ranked by Forbes magazine as its “favorite” in its Best of the Web issue.

Ms. Kahan launched KFA in 2001 out of a desire to assist collectors in what can often times be the intimidating and difficult process of navigating the complex international art market. Her goal has been to make the process of learning about and collecting art both enjoyable and easy.

A quintessential insider, Ms. Kahan tirelessly keeps abreast of the market by visiting galleries and dealers, traveling to art fairs and attending auctions, bringing this wealth of knowledge gained to her clientele.
