Who Am I ?

March 2012

1: Who am I?

I am Charlotte Wilder.

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

I founded the blog The Wilder Things, where I write about style, design, art, and good living. I also blog for the Huffington Post, Boston Magazine, and other smaller blogs as a guest-writer. But I prefer to say I’m a writer and photographer. It sounds more romantic than ‘blogger’. ‘Blogger’ isn’t a beautiful word.

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

I am from Boston, MA, and Rockport, ME, and I hope to take over the internet with my witty commentary, my arresting photographs, and my keen eye. Though at the moment, I’m just going to grab another coffee.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

In real life, journalists and photographers like Marie Colvin and Lynsey Addario who risk their lives to tell stories that wouldn’t otherwise be told. In fiction, though, my biggest hero is Robin Hood from the Disney cartoon version. He is, quite literally, a fox.

5: What book is your bible?

Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man by James Joyce, and The Children’s Book by A.S. Byatt. They’re both about the intersection and blurring of life and art. They are books I constantly re-read.

6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

Things I love: sailing off the coast of Maine, exploring new places with family and friends, finding books and art that inspire me to write and paint, and beautiful clothes. Some of my favorite artists/photographers are John Singer Sargent, Dorothea Lange, Berenice Abbott, Sam Cady, Walker Evans, and Edward Weston. My favorite designers are Isabel Marant, Rag & Bone, Phillip Lim, and J.Crew Collection. I like aesthetics that have some grit to them. I also love the TV shows Mad Men and Downton Abbey; but even if those shows were terrible, I’d still watch them for the costumes.

Things I hate: security at airports, when people are deliberately mean, and bad grammar.

7: What is your raison d’être?

To search for beauty, recognize it, and put it into words.

8: What is your favorite color?

Coral. Neon coral.

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

This is easy: Spaceman Spiff, Calvin’s alter ego in the Calvin and Hobbes comic books. I dressed up as him for multiple Halloweens.

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

Can I say my favorite spot in Boston? Because that’s my home city and the one that’s got my heart. In which case I really love the bar at Clio in the Elliot Hotel. And the restaurant Catalyst, in Cambridge. In New York, I do have a soft spot for the coffee shop La Colombe. That’s a hot spot to me.

11: What turns you on?

When someone can make me laugh until I cry.

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

Q: If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A: Mine would be apples fresh off the tree or lobster. Can you tell I’m a New England-er?
