Who Am I ?
1: Who am I?
I am David Stevenson, a London-based singer/songwriter. I am also an avid painter and I have recently taken up creating custom vinyl toy pieces.
2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?
I have a couple of music and art projects going on at the moment. My main focus is my debut EP, titled ‘Magical Planes’, which I will be releasing myself in a couple of months. I’m also working on a few new customised designs for my ever growing vinyl toy portfolio.
3: Where are you from and where are you going?
Originally I’m from Hertford, a small suburban town just outside London. But right now I’m based in Camden Town, North London. I love this city so I am not sure if I will ever leave. Having said that, a spacious place in California or New York City would be a great way to escape the sometimes dreary and wintery UK weather.
4: Who is your biggest hero?
I know this will sound cheesy and lame, but my biggest hero is my dad. He has taught me so much without even realizing it.
5: What book is your bible?
Without a doubt, On the Road by Jack Kerouac. I must have read it at least twenty times. If life ever gets too predictable, then I feel it’s time I re-read it.
6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?
Things I love are open minds, passionate people, my family and friends, a good single malt scottish whisky, my Martin acoustic guitar, a blank canvas, London, and my beloved Arsenal football club.
Things I hate include early mornings, cold tea, internet buffering, rude people, hangovers, bad movies, and auto-tune (with a passion).
7: What is your raison d’être?
To create music and art that I hope inspires or moves people in some little way.
8: What is your favourite color?
9: Who is your favourite comic book superhero?
Dan Dare from The Eagle.
10: What is your favourite NYC hot spot?
I’m yet to visit NYC, but if the NYC Soho spot is anything like London Soho, then it’d be there.
11: What turns you on?
Simply being creative. Anything from coming up with a new guitar riff or lyric line, to painting a canvas from scratch.
12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?
Q: Give one strange but unknown fact about yourself.
A: My great grandfather Donald Stevenson, who was an aeronautical engineer by trade, was part of the Magic Circle as a magician. He had links with Harry Houdini and was reported to be the last known owner of Houdini’s missing biplane, which was used in Houdini’s famous flights in Australia in 1910.
For David Stevenson, a singer/songwriter from London, music has always given him a way to take a step back from the thoughts crowding his head. David was born into an already creative and imaginative family. Stemming from his parents love of ancient cultures, throughout his childhood he has travelled to many different countries and experienced a huge array of cultures, traditions, religions, and people.
“The moment just after you finish performing a song, but just before you get the crowds reaction is such a rush of anticipation. Nothing beats that rush you get from performing and opening yourself up in that raw, totally honest two-way conversation you can have with an audience”.
From a young age, David has been involved in a various number of bands including one that got to perform at glastonbury in 2003. From here, David has gone from strength to strength and established himself as an acoustic singer/songwriter, and is building a solid following in both the digital, Myspace world, and on the real life gigging circuit. Stylistically inspired by artists like Pete Murray, John Mayer, Ray Lamontagne, Damien Rice, Bob Dylan and The Police, David writes and delivers melodies that burst with heartfelt and raw emotional energy. Avoiding the generic, he writes and performs with passion and a sincere and honest approach, all inspired by his own personal experiences and feelings. Seeing his songs as an extension of himself, he creates a unique and fearless sound, laced with beautiful and impassioned words confronting the confusion of the world around him. His debut EP, titled ‘Magical Planes’ is expected to be released later this year and he is also currently working on his debut album.
David also works as an artist and vinyl toy customizer, creating and commissioning customised canvas and vinyl toy pieces on a made-to-order basis.
