Who Am I ?

April 2012

1: Who am I?

I am Mel DeBarge. Music love, music sharer, student of the arts, historian of sorts, fashion enthusiast, lover of the color purple, lover of the era of 1978-1988, and DJ, currently serving in Nolita.

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

I am a nightlife DJ, and I try to connect the dots between all of the things that I love. I bring music to the people, I produce videos, I share things that I love on my blog, I document history. I’m dedicated to using technology to keep the conversation going amongst people.

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

Born and raised in New York, and I’m never leaving. Except when I bring my music to other states and countries. But I always find my way back.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

Michael Jackson, duh! 1979 “Off The Wall”–everything from his fashion sense to the songs on that album, to dating Brooke Shields; he changed the music and style landscape forever. He also had a monkey!

5: What book is your bible?

Catcher in the Rye; it’s the first book that I ever really read from front to back, and it just felt like it was talking to me.

6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

I love live instrumentals, Paris in September, Quincy Jones, and growing up in the Bronx. I hate raises in train fare, oversized pants, women that curse, and underage smokers.

7: What is your raison d’être?

To try and acheive happiness. Music is what does that for me now, and whatever else strikes me in the moment. You’re going to die anyway, might as well live!

8: What is your favorite color?

Purple! The purple bowtie is my trademark

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

TinTin. I wish I had his hair.

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

Right now, Bleecker Bob’s. It’s a record store that has every record ever made, from Madonna to the Beatles on vinyl. I could stay in there for hours. Also, Bob is a great guy!

11: What turns you on?

A black button-down shirt buttoned all the way up, a little loose with a lot of gold chains on top.

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

I’d be asked “How did your music lead to Bow Ties and Good Times and RenoNights?”And the answer would be, they’re all tied in because they’re just different ways of bringing people together. I have something to stay and I love to connect with my friends and fans, be it through music (DJing), photos and writing (blog) or video (RenoNights),
