TRENDS: DESIGNS THAT HYPNOTIZE

Mesmerizing Patterns Are This Spring’s Bold New Trend

By Eden Herbstman

April 2012

Going into the summer seasons, bursts of colors and patterns always emerge, but designers have been pushing pattern boundaries even more lately, creating looks with hypnotic effects. But hey, the bolder the piece, the better for a fashion-forward look, so don’t be afraid to stand out and be noticed. (Admittedly, you’ll be hard to miss in these picks.)

Stella McCartney’s spring 2012 collection is turning out to be a favorite red carpet go-to among celebs. Helena Christensen is the latest to don this short-sleeve dress. From afar the dress looks simply like a mashup of Xs and Os, but up close you see the delicate hints of yellow and designs within the blue. The perfect feminine touch is the bottom black embellishment, a Stella McCartney signature of the collection. For a more casual look, Jil Sander’s swirling paisleys are an energetic alternative to the simple white t-shirt. Pair with straight leg jeans and pumps and this casual day look becomes a chic night time option. The newsboy pant gets an edgy update with A.L.C’s silk mirror print, another huge trend this season, which puts a trippy spin on tribal print. Missoni’s classic knit pattern goes bohemian in this crop top. The sexy summer top is perfect for any beach getaway, or better yet, rock it at the upcoming Coachella music festival. Daring enough to wear on the streets of New York City? You’ll be sure to stop traffic. Derek Lam’s jaw dropping pencil skirt is a must have this season. The watersnake patchwork gives a modern twist on the classic silhouette.
