IMPOSSIBLE CONVERSATIONS / IMPECCABLE STYLE

The Best Looks from the 2012 COSTUME INSTITUTE GALA

By Eden Herbstman

May 2012

The cream of the crop of New York’s fashion and social scene was in full attendance at this year’s Costume Institute Gala, celebrating Schiaparelli and Prada’s “Impossible Conversations.” The gala, better known as “Fashion’s Prom Night,” saw no shortage of statement pieces and jaw-dropping looks. Though metallics seemed to be the reigning trend of the night, we saw a full fashion spectrum, including dark gothic glamour, playful feminine tones, full-length gowns with dramatic trains, and fashionable minis.

One of the night’s first metallic stunners was seen on co-chair of the event Carey Mulligan. Her sequinned, two-tone gold and silver halter gown was truly unique, making her one of the night’s most remembered looks. Even though Karolina Kurkova’s gilded ensemble–complete with a coordinating turban–was reminiscent of Kate Moss’s bold 2009 Marc Jacob’s Met Gala look, the 5’11 supermodel looked flawless and regal in her custom Rachel Zoe backless gown, snagging her the title of “Best Dressed” in this 20’s inspired creation. Jessica Alba was a Grecian beauty in her Michael Kors one-shoulder metallic gown, finishing the look with a burgundy lip and retro waves.

Camilla Belle channeled old Hollywood glamour and gave it a sexy edge, pairing a dark lip with her ivory, tulle-beaded Ralph Lauren gown. Keeping her hair simple and pulled back, Camilla was the “Belle of the Ball.” Also going with a dark lip, Kate Bosworth showed that one can look ultra glamourous without needing a floor-length gown. Her super-sexy and short Prada ostrich-feathered dress was even more dramatic and elegant due to the ombre detail which transitioned from bourdeaux to navy. Another mini dress success was red carpet queen Gwenyth Paltrow’s backless halter Prada dress. Never one to play it safe, her dress was equal parts sexy and chic, showing just enough skin while still staying fashion-forward. Her soft gray dress was complete with oversize paillettes detail.

The always beautiful Karlie Kloss had one of the night’s favorite looks. The supermodel had the best pink moment, paying homage to Elsa Shiaparelli’s trademark color. She wore one of her designer date’s creations, with delicate black lace underneath the pink draping. Another one of the night’s hot model/designer couples was Chanel Iman and Tom Ford. The gothic-chic, floor-length Tom Ford gown Iman wore was a daring red carpet knockout. Gisele Bundchen was another model who went to the dark side in a sexy, sequin-embellished Givenchy number with a front zipper along the bodice. Always one of the night’s most anticipated guests, Gisele looked flawless in this leg-baring silhouette.

With all the gorgeous girls on the red carpet, it was easy to forget that the night was just as much about men’s fashion as it was the gowns. Cameron Silver, on the arm of designer Nicole Miller, showed off a Met Gala ticket suit inspired by Miller’s archival “ticket print.” The Decades owner kept it fun on the red carpet with a vintage Schiaparelli walking stick.
