Who Am I ?
THOMAS PATRICK MAGUIRE
1: Who am I?
I am Thomas Patrick Maguire from Jamaica, Queens. I am a singer-songwriter. I really enjoy creating folk music and putting songs together. I have been playing live since 2004. I also enjoy painting.
2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?
I write songs and I play shows. I am finishing up my upcoming album, which will be my fifth: “No Suppression, Gentleman Drunk.”
3: Where are you from and where are you going?
I grew up in Woodside, Queens. I don’t really think about where I am going too much, but I guess I want to get to the point where I am playing more shows, and playing music for a living.
4: Who is your biggest hero?
I really don’t have any heroes but Bob Dylan comes as close as possible to a hero, because he inspires me. He’s a great song writer. I’ve seen him several times and I have always enjoyed it. He mixes up his setlist so that it is never the same. Also, he never compromised in putting out art his way.
5: What book is your bible?
On the Road by Jack Kerouac. It’s a book I can identify with and it really captures the concept of American freedom.
6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?
I love records, going to shows, playing music, writing songs, painting and drawing, and visiting museums and galleries. I also love beer. I hate obnoxious/pretentious people, injustice, and reality television.
7: What is your raison d’être?
I guess to try to make a little of bit music that my peers–and hopefully everybody–can enjoy.
8: What is your favorite color?
9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?
10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?
Goodbye Blue Monday in Brooklyn because they offer cheap beer, it’s free to get in, and a lot of times there is some great music playing. They have a back area where bands play, and I always have a good time there. They also sell records and good food, so a lot of my friends play music and read poetry there. And the Sidewalk Cafe on the Lower East Side, because they always book great artists.
11: What turns you on?
12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?
What music are you currently listening to? I’m listening to Phoebe Blue, Barry Bliss, Beck, Leonard Cohen’s new album “Old Ideas” and tons of other stuff.
Basement Folk artist Thomas Patrick Maguire tells stories. Influenced equally by melancholy troubadours like Elliott Smith and Nick Drake, and by iconoclastic ’90s alternative rock like Sebadoh and Nirvana, he sets his low-key tales of working-class life to deceptively simple, stripped-down melodies that haunt the listener long after they’ve first heard his music.
Maguire’s music has been featured on highly regarded local, national and international radio stations including WFMU with DJ Keili Hamilton, NPR’s All Songs Considered with Robin Hilton, and the UK’s Tuckshop Community Radio. Maguire has also toured Europe, playing in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Germany.
“No Suppression, Gentleman Drunk” is Maguire’s fifth album and is due to be released Summer 2012.
