Who Am I ?
1: Who am I?
My name is Christopher Stribley (for correct pronunciation, just remember that there’s a rib in my last name). I am an artist and a freelance graphic designer.
2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?
I design a variety of things, from magazine ads to book covers to event posters. I’ve been working on the cover for my friend Rich Merritt’s upcoming novel. He’s perhaps best known for his novel, Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star. As far as personal projects, I’m working on a new cake sculpture, as well as a new series of nature photos, which I have big plans for.
3: Where are you from and where are you going?
I was born in Perth, Western Australia. I plan on staying in New York a while longer and then perhaps I’ll move to somewhere in Europe or back home to Australia.
4: Who is your biggest hero?
That’s hard to pin down, because I have a hero for every occasion. When it comes to writing, there’s Oscar Wilde and Virginia Woolf, for photography, there’s Deborah Turbeville, Annie Liebovitz, and Anton Corbijn, for art, there’s Egon Schiele, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Vincent Van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Alberto Giacometti, and so many more. Then you have characters like Edith “Little Edie” Beale and Quentin Crisp. And then there are superheroes! Having said that, my biggest heroes are those who are out there living authentic lives, doing what they believe in. And Amy Sedaris.
5: What book is your bible?
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. I received this book at a very dark point in my life and it helped remind me to find the humor in everyday life.
6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?
I love a good cup of tea, fish and chips, chocolate icebox cake from Billy’s Bakery, and music by truly talented people like Siouxsie, Goldfrapp, Bjork, Diamanda Galas, and David Bowie. I also like flowers, cats, bunnies, the beach, and summer. I hate elevator music, arguing, fighting, exclusivity, snobbery, purple, and brussels sprouts.
7: What is your raison d’être?
Creating, learning, sharing, and hopefully teaching.
8: What is your favorite color?
9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?
10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?
11: What turns you on?
Intelligence, creativity, a good sense of humor, wit and thunderstorms.
12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?
Do you have any regrets?
Yes, and I’m troubled when I hear people say that they don’t. I regret not starting my own real life a lot sooner. I wasted too many years living apologetically and I don’t have time to do that anymore. Life flies by too quickly to live it based on a fear of disappointing other people. Be your authentic self and do what you believe in!
Christopher Stribley is an artist, photographer, and writer living in New York. His art is a personal review of and a response to things he encounters in every day life, as well as a reflection of his influences and the things that matter to him. From the benign to the confrontational, he approaches his subjects with a variety of media with the hope of conveying as much color, depth, and texture as possible. He often incorporates found objects and materials, sometimes as a visual pun and sometimes to highlight the underlying message of a piece. Whatever the outcome, he hopes to engage the viewer and leave them with something to think about and to enjoy.
