Who Am I ?

June 2012

1: Who am I?

I am Monica Lynn Briones. I am the youngest of 6 children and a serial entrepreneur living in Brooklyn, NY.

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

I’m the Creative Director and owner of Sew Moni, a sewing and crafts company that teaches sewing classes. My company is currently working on a series of “Sewing 101″ videos. The videos encompass everything from jean re-construction to quilt making. We’re also expanding our community initiatives, with projects such as Small Bizz Sundays, a day during which we host local and aspiring entrepreneurs so that they are able to mix, mingle, and discover ways to financially survive via their art.

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

I’m originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, which is nicknamed the “Sparkling City by the Sea.” At the moment, I’m going to Paris for my first time. After that, I’d like to visit São Paulo, Brazil.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

Her name is Joaquina Casarez. She’s my grandmother and was possibly one of the most intelligent and warmest human beings I’ve known. She had a knack for making almost any place a home and a sharp business mind. I also admired her humbleness and willingness to love.

5: What book is your bible?

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by British writer Mark Haddon.

6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

I love ice cream. I dislike liver. I love the color green. I dislike sprained or broken ankles. I dislike cold sandwiches. I love slow dancing.

7: What is your raison d’être?

To encourage women around me to create businesses and to be business owners.

8: What is your favorite color?

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

Mint Aizawa.

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

I’m obsessed with Bembe, a somewhat hidden Latin American lounge and dance spot in South Williamsburg. I also love Moto for rainy days, oysters, and clams.

11: What turns you on?

Good food, good drinks, and good company.

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

Mint chocolate chip or vanilla?
