Who Am I ?
July /August 2012
1: Who am I?
Charles Browne, DJ, designer, and entrepreneur. It depends on who you’re asking. While I was in college I worked in retail at Barney’s NY where my manager gave me the nickname the “Fresh Prince of CO-OP.” She said it was because I brought downtown music and fashion uptown together. When I travel I try to spread that to the world. I’m a creative director for the menswear label Man vs Machine, and an international DJ. I hate titles though and think of myself more like an ambassador of culture.
2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?
I’m currently launching a designer sock label named “Alia Porci,” working on a mix-tape compilation of new hip hop artists, and working on the street campaign for my clothing brand, Man vs Machine.
3: Where are you from and where are you going?
I’m from Albany, NY, live in NYC, and and am going to the moon.
4: Who is your biggest hero?
My dad. He set the blueprint for the person I am today by teaching me about finding solutions instead of dwelling on the problems, and by leading by example. He also showed me that no matter where I get in life I should always reach back and help others who may not have been given the same opportunities that I have He also invested in my first set of turntables when I was 12. Thanks Dad.
5: What book is your bible?
My favorite book is The Count of Monte Cristo. Something about a poor guy from the bottom overcoming adversity to become the Count really makes me smile. The lessons that come from that story are priceless.
6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?
I love good music, a good documentary, and a good chess game. I hate pretentious people who judge others by their possessions and not by their character.
7: What is your raison d’être?
Loving life and having fun while at the same time giving back to people who may be less fortunate than others. Anytime I host an event, a charity is directly tied to the celebration. I was adopted as a kid and feel like if I wasn’t given a second chance in life I wouldn’t be where I am today, and I don’t take it for granted.
8: What is your favorite color?
9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?
10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?
11: What turns you on?
A beautiful woman with a nice smile.
12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?
What is one of your coolest moments you’ve had in your profession? When Michael Jordan came to a party I was DJing in Las Vegas and requested a song. The song was Mary J Blige “Real Love”. I’m a huge Jordan fan.
Charles Browne has become synonymous with downtown Manhattan. Mixing predominately hip-hop indie-rock, electro, and funk, Charlie’s musical stylings reflect the eccentric makeup of the Lower East Side. Charlie landed his first set of turntables at age 12 and since then has DJed events for Whitney Houston, John Legend, and Universal Music Group. While working at legendary Barney’s NY during college, Charlie was dubbed “the fresh prince of co-op” due to his East Village meets Fifth Avenue flair. Hear his music; watch him spin. When he’s not spinning, Charlie splits his time between working on his fashion label Man vs. Machine with designer Jordan White and throwing down in the elusive Greenwich Village chess circle.
