Who Am I ?
1: Who am I?
My name is Julian Mercer.
2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?
I am an actor, and I am currently working on Jon Robin Baitz’s brilliant play A Fair Country. I’m in the process of finishing an original screenplay with my writing partner John Griffin, and I’m working on remixing 90s classics.
3: Where are you from and where are you going?
We’re all going where we came from, but who knows where that is? In the meantime, I’m scheduled to star in a major feature film about the life of Chet Baker next year, and I’m in the cast of HIM, a new play that is scheduled to have a run in London and Bombay next year and will hopefully turn into a TV show as well.
4: Who is your biggest hero?
I’m not a big hero kind of guy. There are people who inspire me tremendously in my life, but it can be the milkman just as much as Mandela.
5: What book is your bible?
The I Ching, the book of change.
6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?
Love: Being completely present. Looking into my girlfriend’s beautiful eyes. Listening to Chopin on Sunday with the windows wide open. Smiling at strangers. Flirting with dogs. Coffee with croissant and the day’s Le Monde in Paris on a lazy Monday in June. I love inspiring people and I love beautiful music and great writers.
I dislove it if someone farts next to me in the subway, if I step in dog poo with flip flops on a hot summer day, if dental floss breaks and gets stuck between your teeth, the gate closing 3 minutes before getting there. I don’t like intolerance, especially the one towards myself…
7: What is your raison d’être?
To inspire, to ignite, and to heal.
8: What is your favorite color?
The deep green of a mountain lake.
9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?
10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?
My balcony in summer, the bar at Sleep no More, Le Bain, the Soho House roof, the park benches in Washington Square Park next to some good jazz, and any new boutique hip restaurant right before it’s hip.
11: What turns you on?
Talent put to work turns me on. Magic turns me on. Great playwrights like Clifford Odets, Tennessee Williams and George Bernard Shaw. Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Olivier, travel to the world’s weirdest places, cave diving, a good Muay Thai fight…oh man, I could keep going…I think it’s human genius in action that turns me on.
12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?
Why aren’t you doing in life what you really want to do?
Julian Mercer is an actor, screenwriter, and musician.
