Who Am I ?

Winter 2012-2013

1: Who am I?

I am an up and coming NYC hair colorist.

2: What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

I am currently a color apprentice at Mizu New York. I’m working on a photo shoot for Jillian Mercado and my entry for Goldwell’s ColorZoom ’13 Challenge.

3: Where are you from and where are you going?

I’m originally from Virginia Beach, VA and am working on becoming a top NYC colorist and an editorial colorist.

4: Who is your biggest hero?

My biggest hero is Frida Kahlo. She overcame many personal and physical struggles and become a world-renowned artist.

5: What book is your bible?

At the moment, my bible is Grow by Antony Whitaker. It’s a guide to being successful as a hairdresser and as a businessperson.

6: What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

I’m in love with creativity, playing and absorbing music, and the beauty of humanity. There are not many things I hate, but the one thing I absolutely hate is close-mindedness. It is debilitating and stifling.

7: What is your raison d’être?

My raison d’être has to be creativity and positivity. I thrive off them!

8: What is your favorite color?

Hands down, my favorite color is purple. It’s such a happy color!

9: Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

My favorite comic book hero is without a doubt Batman. He is an ordinary man who does extraordinary things in the dark.

10: What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

I’m going to have to be general on this one and say Brooklyn. I love spending time in Prospect Park and the Grand Army Area. The vibe and diversity of Brooklyn’s inhabitants inspire me constantly.

11: What turns you on?

Confidence, creativity, and a good haircut turn me on. Big time.

12: What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

What would you be if you weren’t a colorist? A Rock Star.

A native of Virginia Beach, VA, Melissa Garner left a career in banking in 2010 and moved to New York to pursue a more creative career in hairdressing. She chose to study at Arrojo Cosmetology based on its high standards of excellence. After graduation, she worked as an apprentice at Mizu New York. Since working at Mizu New York, Melissa has become a national semi-finalist in Goldwell’s ColorZoom ’12 Challenge and assisted NAHA Hairstylist of the Year, Dimitrios Tsioumas, on his editorial photo shoots. She has been featured in Modern Salon and Behind the Chair magazines. Her inspiration comes from playing music, the perfection of space and nature, and her love of art.
