NYFW DAY SIX
A Look at Day Six of NYFW
By Eden Herbstman
Modern Opulance was the theme for Naeem Khan’s F/W 13 presentation. The collection drew inspiration from 1920’s illustration, and decadence of the Byzantine empire. Showcased through impeccable beadwork on both short cocktail dresses and regal evening gowns, Khan was able to the bridge the gap between the two time periods. On paper it may have seemed a bit far fetched, but its execution proved otherwise. Oversized satin tunics with bejeweled embellishments brought an exotic edge to the collection. High collared bow ties seemed to be the day’s leading trend, showing up on the runway at Dennis Basso, who celebrated his 30th anniversary show. I got to talk to the designer a few days before his show about how the 30 year mark felt. “I can’t believe how quickly the time went by, like in a snap. It’s great, and I have made a lot of friends along the way. Many people who will be at the show were at my original show.” Joan Collins, Joan Rivers, and Martha Stewart were a few of the legendary women hailing in the front row. Basso stayed true to his aesthetic, while incorporating blue alligator and lime colored furs, over sophisticated evening gowns.
Meanwhile Vera Wang displayed romance with an edge in her collection, choosing deep colored lips to accompany the beautifully constructed dresses. Bold floral prints were splashed on both the clothes and the runway. The show’s arc developed from blacks, to shades of purple, ending with a crescendo of bright fuchsias and orange. So far, one of my favorite collections of the F/W 13 season.
Once again The Standard, and its East Village outpost proved to be one of the hottest places to be during nightlife hours. Chez Andre in the East Village hosted the Rodarte after party, and jumping over to the west side Purple Magazine hosted their usual fashion week soiree at the Top of The Standard.
One more day to go folks! It’s not time to take off those high heels just yet. Go to Patrick McMullan.com for full NYFW coverage.
