Going Behind The Clothes with Designer SALLY LAPOINTE

By Eden Herbstman

Winter 2012-2013

Wearing a Sally LaPointe creation doesn’t mean playing it safe. Since debuting in 2011, the designer quickly became a fashion favorite for her sharp, standout design and her keen eye for balancing edginess with sophistication. Her talent and vision have molded a line  for modern femininity. With the presentation of her sixth collection right around the corner, the designer weighs in on the tone of her F/W 13 collection, and understanding what women want.

Eden Herbstman: How do you apply your background in fine art as a fashion designer?

Sally LaPointe: My background in fine art has a great influence on my creative process as a designer.  I think it is strongly connected to the way I conceive and formulate my end vision.  My experience in painting has the largest influence of all the mediums I have worked with. I create a lot of my own custom textiles for the collection, which feels like my way of painting garments. Doing this allows me to really get my hands into it and really put my distinct and individual stamp on the clothes.

EH: How has living in New York City provided inspiration to your design process?

SL: Living in NYC has sharpened my eye and raised my level of visual sophistication. I am constantly observing and taking note of the way New York City women carry themselves; it’s unique, it’s sophisticated, and it has a toughness to it.  I have to pay attention to these women. They are my customers, and I want to continue to create collections that fulfill the desires of these types of sharp women, offering them things that they want and helping them to look the way they would want to present themselves.

EH: What do you want women to feel wearing a Sally LaPointe piece?

SL: I want the woman to thrive on confidence, sophistication, and femininity. I want people to look at her and think, “Wow, she looks so pretty, but I’m afraid she may bite.”

EH: After five collections, how do you approach each show?

SL: Honestly, I think a lot of it is about following your gut.  Most of what I do is really listening to myself and taking in everything I’ve learned and applying it in order to move forward.  Over the last few seasons, I have spent time evaluating the strengths of my collections and learning how to emphasize those points without losing my creative point of view.

EH: What can we expect from your F/W 13 collection?

SL: Intensity, sensuality, and luxury.
