POETRY IN MOTION
A Conversation with Designer KATRIN SCHNABL
By Eden Herbstman
Mixing different textures of bright leathers and cool satins, German born designer Katrin Schnabl speaks to women who are modern, bold, and have a flare for the unique. Her background as a trained ballet dancer brings a poetic edge and keen eye to her designs, seeing the world, and clothing, through romantic rhythms and flowing art. Movement, fluidity, and practicality are all executed through her attention to draping and tailoring, making her a designer to watch in the upcoming seasons.
Eden Herbstman: How did growing up in Germany influence your personal style?
Katrin Schnabl: I think of myself as hybrid with a very strong structural sense paired with a probing curiosity. With style, the most important thing is that you have to be comfortable in what you put on, so that it may magnify you in that desired way. It is about the right juxtaposition to engage a bit of a tension of a contradiction that empowers and inspires. That is what keeps it interesting.
EH: If your collections could tell a story, what would it be?
KS: Each collection is its own story, it communicates and engages ‘live’ a set of associate experiences, very emotional, and transformative; evoking what it is to be and feel like at this point in time. If I were a writer there would be words here, but I am a designer, so I invite the clothes to tell it.
EH: Does your background as a trained ballet dancer influence your design process at all?
KS: Dance is immediate and direct, it is poetry with the body. In some ways it came first. Dance defines how we feel, and navigates the space around the body. It is sculptural, kinetic, architectural, fluid and rhythmic, and that is what I tap into when I design.
EH: Who are some of your style icons?
KS: Tilda Swinton, Grace Jones, Catherine Deneueve, Gena Rowlands, and Amelia Earhart.
EH: How have you grown as a designer since debuting your first collection?
KS: One changes with one’s experiences. I’m learning so much from the process of getting the collection out there, and the strong positive reaction. All that feeds into how I am approaching and building the next one.
EH: Where do you see your brand in the next five years?
KS: Building our presence. Represented by key retailers, in select cities, as well as with own stores, building surely, steadily, and strategically.
