Who Am I ?

ANGELA SLOAN

Fall 2013

1. Who am I?

I’m Angela Sloan; I’m a farm girl from Virginia, who recently made my way to the Big Apple. I’m a redhead, an identical twin, a writer, a lipstick lover, and a film obsessive.

2. What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

I’m actually about to interview Kembra Pfahler, front woman of the band The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black, for a column that my twin sister and I write called Closet Space, which is a part of the online literary magazine, Spaces. I’m incredibly excited about it. Kembra’s going to dress my twin, Katherine, and I up in her Karen Black stage costumes, complete with body paint, blackened teeth, and enormous fright wigs. It’s going to be a scream.

3. Where are you from and where are you going?

I’m from a small, rural town in Virginia called Cumberland. I was raised there by my mother and father with my sisters on a poultry and cattle farm. I’m going everywhere: I want to experience it all. What I’m looking for is a career to explore my talent as a writer, but I’m also fascinated by film and the arts in general.

4. Who is your biggest hero?

I’d have to say it’s a tie between my mother and Joan Crawford.

5. What book is your bible?

I’d have to say the text for Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire. I have such a deep love for Blanche Du Bois: she’s a difficult character and very complex, but I really respect her and want to protect her from the world. I relate to the bond between the sisters, Blanche and Stella, in the play, as well as Blanche’s desire for magic instead of reality.

6. What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

I love red lipstick, big meals, hot baths, long naps, Coca-Cola, Bloody Mary cocktails, old Hollywood, gossip rag magazines, costume jewelry, any flower (but especially roses), sweets, fancy French perfume, and spending as much time with Katherine as possible. I also love small furry animals, Bob Dylan, reruns of The Golden Girls, sending handwritten notes and cards in the post, going to museums, and taking the subway everywhere I go. I really dislike rude people (especially elitists), jogging, hot weather, sunburns, filling out long forms at the doctor’s office, waterbeds, and anyone who’s cruel to a woman or child.

7. What is your raison dӐtre?

I exist so that I can have coffee with Katherine every morning. My family is my reason for living.

8. What is your favorite color?

Why, red, of course, darling: a deep shade of gorgeous red.

9. Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

Definitely Catwoman. She is such a tough glamorous bitch. I want to be Catwoman. I used to wear ridiculously long, pointed acrylic fingernails, perhaps in a way to be like Catwoman, but I filed my claws down.

10. What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

Relaxing on the beautiful velvet furniture by the fireplace at the Bowery Hotel while having tea with your girlfriends is an exquisite way to spend an afternoon.

11. What turns you on?

Quirky, kind, funny people, and a perfectly groomed mustache.

12. What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

What is your favorite film? There are too many for me to name, but some include Blue Velvet, My Fair Lady, Maniac, Carrie, and Bonnie and Clyde.
