Who Am I ?

Fall 2013

1. Who am I?

What a completely existential question! I’m Katherine Sloan: a redheaded identical twin who loves films, literature, popular culture, and makeup. I’m a writer from a farm in Virginia who has recently moved to New York City.

2. What do you do and what project are you currently working on?

I’m a writer and am going to interview Kembra Pfahler soon. She’s the creator and frontwoman of the band, The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. My twin sister, Angela, and I write for a fashion-as-art column called Closet Space, which is a part of the online literary magazine, Spaces. Kembra is going to dress Angela and I up in her Karen Black gear. I can’t wait! I think I want to be painted a lovely pale blue. I also sell knickers at an upscale lingerie boutique on the Upper West Side.

3. Where are you from and where are you going?

This question reminds me of the incredible Joyce Carol Oates short story, “Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?” I’m from a very small county in Virginia called Cumberland and I’m going places, baby. I want to go everywhere but, for now, a ride upstate to watch the leaves turn and to inspect some brightly-hued foliage is a destination of mine!

4. Who is your biggest hero?

Nick Cave (the Aussie musician/singer/songwriter and front man of the Bad Seeds, not the artist of the same name whose name is plastered all over NYC subways because of his show at Grand Central Terminal that was held way back in March). And Nick Cave’s beautiful wife, the model Susie Bick Cave. And my parents, of course.

5. What book is your bible?

There are so many incredible, life changing, and life affirming works of literature! Play It As It Lays by Joan Didion and D.H. Lawrence’s Women In Love are two novels that mean quite a lot to me! Also, anything by Bret Easton Ellis.

6. What are some things you love? And some things you hate?

I really love taking long hot baths and lounging around in a lovely dressing gown while watching television or flipping through a stack of brand new fashion magazines while drinking tea from a beautiful teacup. I also am a complete soda pop addict. I love fresh flowers and going to the movies. Some things that I do not like quite so much include cruel people, fitting rooms, fever blisters, and those rate-your-pain scales at the doctor’s office.

7. What is your raison dӐtre?

When it comes to these existential questions, I get very indecisive! The whole what-is-my-purpose question is tricky! If I can make someone else’s day a bit better or tell them that they look lovely, then that’s pretty damn good.

8. What is your favorite color?

Blood red! Or, the beautiful reds from Ingmar Bergman’s Cries and Whispers. Those fade-outs are incredible!

9. Who is your favorite comic book superhero?

Probably Batman. But, it would have to be Michael Keaton as Batman. It’s all about the pouty pink lips!

10. What is your favorite NYC hot spot?

I love to go to the Rose Theatre at BAM to see movies. They always have the best showings; I went to see Possession with Isabelle Adjani and Cruising. William Friedkin was there and I got to meet him; he was incredibly kind.

11. What turns you on?

T. S. Eliot”s The Wasteland.

12. What would the last question of this questionnaire be if you were the one asking?

Q: If you could kiss anyone in the world (living or dead), who would it be?

A: Burt Lancaster around the time he was in The Swimmer.
