PERFECT NIGHT

A Report from the 24th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert & Gala

By Anita Marie Antonini

Spring 2014

A happy New Year and blessings from Tibet House US!

Tibet House US Co-Founder and President, Robert Thurman, and the Monks of the Drepung Monastery kicked off a night of musical collaboration for the Tibet House US 24th Annual Benefit Concert at Carnegie Hall celebrating the Year of the Horse.

This glorious concert is a gift of art where the musicians hold up their shields of poetry and song. Godparents of Punk, Iggy Pop and Patti Smith, made this one a perfect night.

This one of a kind experience where you will not see or here anything else like it anywhere is made possible by Artistic Director, Philip Glass, who rings up different musicians from around the globe each year to perform and donate their artistic services of traditional prayer, spoken word, and music.

Some of the highlights of the concert included:

The National’s Matt Berninger, Aaron Dessner, and Bryce Dessner, just off their SNL gig, performing with an ensemble comprised of Sufjan Stevens and the Scorchio String Quartet. It was simply beautiful.

New Order’s (Bernard Sumner, Phil Cunningham, and Tom Chapman) collaboration on a total kick ass set with Iggy Pop just brought down the house with songs “Transmission” and “Love Will Tear Us Apart.”

Additional performances by Robert Randolph, Tim Fain, Techung, Mike Garry, Joe Duddell, and Nico Muhly rounded out the night.

As in the wheel of life regarded in Tibetan Culture, what goes around comes around.

You’re going to reap just what you sow.” – Lou Reed.

Patti Smith closed out the show with a sweet rendition of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” accompanied by her daughter Jesse Paris Smith on piano and Eric Hoegemeyer on drums, in memory of Lou and dedicated to his wife, Laurie (Anderson). Plus they gave us a version of “Horses by Patti Smith and her Band–how could they not in the year of the Horse?–and a “People Have The Power” finale (always a crowd favorite!).

On missing our dear Lou Reed (March 2, 1942 – October 27, 2013), “Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days. An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend–or a meaningful day”. - His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Tibet House US was founded in 1987 by Columbia University professor Robert Thurman, actor Richard Gere and modern composer Philip Glass at the behest of the 14th H.H. Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.
